  What is the microbiome and what helps it flourish?
  Your gut microbiome is the collection of trillions of microbes living within your GI tract, many of which are beneficial. If you can improve the health of those good microbes, they can in turn improve your own health. 

  Diversity is a key factor associated with a healthy intestinal microbiome. Each good microbial species and strain has its own unique set of benefits, plus they keep negative microbes in check—so the more types of beneficial bacteria you have, the more positive effects your body gets.   One of the greatest influencers of microbial diversity is the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. In essence, DPA serves as a storage reservoir for both DHA and EPA, and as dietary intake of DPA increases, the tissue levels of both DHA and EPA increase. Without question, DPA is equally as important as EPA and DHA in fish oils, and data suggests it is an absolutely required component of any fish oil supplement. For example, population-based trials have demonstrated that higher levels of DPA in human blood are associated with increased degrees of reported health benefits common to fish oil supplementation.

HOW IT WORKS

EPA & DHA HELP SUPPORT ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*

Omega-3 essential polyunsaturated fatty acids have distinct chemical structures and physiologic functions that distinguish them from other families of essential fatty acids. Often lacking in Western diets, omega-3 fatty acids compete with other fatty acids in the body for cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzyme metabolism, incorporation into cell membranes, and the synthesis of lipid mediators.^1-3 The long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are almost exclusively marine-derived and act together to influence membrane fluidity and signal transduction pathways.⁴

EPA and DHA are abundantly enriched in the retina, brain, and heart tissues.^5-7 Each have preferential distribution within the phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes and have been shown to exert unique biological actions.⁴

Humans have limited capacity to endogenously produce EPA and DHA; therefore they are considered essential fatty acids. Dietary supplementation of EPA and DHA is an effective way to increase intake of these essential fatty acids.
